It will drastically improve heavy soil or sandy soil aeration, allowing plants to grow much better. It will also retain the necessary moisture and nutrients to help feed the plant. It is applied in  root cuttings will promote anchorage for new roots, and speed up root growth. It can be used with  potting mix for improved seed germination. It will release the moisture to the seedlings as and when they need it. You plant will need have less water consumption as the vermiculite retains water. It can be used in hydroponics, essentially soil-free gardening. Though hydroponics gardeners do not use soil. Can retain too much moisture.
